Travel Tuesday's: New Zealand IV (Arthur's Pass / Hokitika / Franz Josef Glacier)
Destination: Franz Josef Glacier, New Zealand
Weather: Sunny, 60-75 degrees
Hey guys!! This Travel Tuesday, we are in New Zealand on the South Island and headed from Christchurch to the West Coast to see the Tasman Sea for the first time! It was a long day in the car, but we got an early jump on it. Arthur's Pass is a great place to hike and that was our first stop of the day. We only walked to a waterfall close by and took a bathroom break...it was a hoppin' spot with lots hikers!
This was also the beginning of seeing a lot of people hitch-hiking, which I thought it was very interesting how common it was. And before you ask, no we didn't pick anyone up....I think I have seen too many horror films to not have some level of skepticism and not to mention we were in a foreign country!
For lunch we stopped in Hokitika, such a cool town!! Definitely worth the stop and our first beach walk on the West Coast. As you can see from the picture there's tons of driftwood.
From then we continued onto Franz Josef Glacier for a couple days. Hiked to the base of the glacier, we hit the weather perfectly! Apparently before we got there it rained for about a month straight and rained the day we left...so we were lucky. When we went (late February) the hotels and motels were extremely booked. We found a motel and actually really enjoyed our location, it was walkable from everywhere. A MUST-SEE if you are in New Zealand!
Hope you enjoy the pictures!!
